Born in Lynn, Massachusetts less than two miles from his family's home in Swampscott, to Irish emigrants, he was christened Walter Andrew Brennan. His father was an engineer and inventor. Walter Brennan studied engineering at Rindge Technical High School in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
